Urgent recall issued for cheese sold in Woolworths and IGA supermarkets

A recall has been issued for two cheese products sold at Woolworths and IGA supermarkets across Australia over fears of a potential listeria contamination.

Snowbrand Australia Pty Ltd, which trades as Unicorn Cheese, is recalling its Unicorn Classic Camembert 125g and Community Co French Style Camembert 125g.

The recall notice is due to a potential microbial Listeria contamination.

Those infected with the bacterium, called Listeria monocytogenes, are at risk of developing Listeriosis - a potentially deadly type of food poisoning.

The elderly, pregnant women and their unborn babies, and people with low immune systems are most at risk of developing severe illness.

The cheese products have been available for sale at Woolworths supermarkets in Victoria, NSW, SA and Tasmania, as well as IGA stores in Victoria and Queensland.

They were also sold at Natures Best, V&C Food Distributors and Bills Cheese and Yoghurts in NSW, and Our United Food Co in QLD.

The affected batches include batch 123123E Est No 287 with a best-before date of 8 Nov 2023.

Consumers are advised to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone concerned about their health is encouraged to seek medical advice. 

Listeriosis symptoms

Symptoms begin with a fever and muscle aches.

The disease can spread to the blood or central nervous system in high-risk individuals very quickly, causing sudden fevers, intense headaches, a stiff neck, confusion or delirium, convulsions or a loss of balance.
